Billy raced toward the house, bursting with the news about the coming party at school. As he ran into the living room, the front door slammed behind him. "Billy, how many times have I told you not to slam the door?" his mom called from the kitchen. "Don't you ever listen?" Billy set his school papers on the coffee table and walked into the kitchen.
"Mom, there is going to be a party at school tomorrow. It is Lisa's birthday."
"That's nice, Billy. Now you go change your clothes and go outside," his mom answered.
Billy felt disappointed. He didn't understand why no one was interested in the important things in his life. When Dad came home, Mom always stopped what she was doing and listened to him. But then, Dad never did dumb things like slamming the door, unless he was mad.
Billy took off his school clothes and went to his dresser to get out his play clothes. As he looked for a pair of pants, he thought about how wonderful it would be when he grew up and wouldn't do so many things that made people mad at him. When he finished changing, he went back into the kitchen. Mom was wiping off the counter. She had just finished cleaning up the kitchen. "Billy, why don't you go outside and play while it is still nice out? It looks like it might rain later," she said.
But Mom, I wanted to be with you for a while."
"You can spend time with me later. Right now, I have things to do, so I want you to get your jacket and go outside." It seemed like Mom was always busy.
Billy went outside and looked at his play yard. It was a very nice play yard, but it was lonely most of the time. He went over to the sand box and took out some of his toy soldiers. He was the general and could make the soldiers do whatever he wanted them to do. He lined them up and staged a dramatic battle. Soon, he grew tired of moving the soldiers around in the sand. He picked up his truck and began to make roads.
He thought about the party coming up the next day at school. Parties were always fun. There were good things to eat and there were fun games to play. Best of all, there were other kids to play with. When Billy ran out of space for roads, he walked back into the house.
"Can I watch cartoons, Mom?" he asked.
"It is too nice outside today to be sitting in front of the TV," was the answer. His mother turned around and looked at Billy. He was covered with sand from the roads he had built.
"Billy! Look at the mess you are making all over the floor!" she yelled. "You are just full of sand. Now I have to clean this floor all over again. You get outside and take your shoes and socks off and brush all of that sand off your pants. You are going to spend the rest of the afternoon in your room. Maybe then you can learn to be more careful."
Billy looked down at his pants. Particles of sand clung to the fabric and the laces of his tennies were almost buried in it.
Billy went out back and removed his shoes and socks. He felt his eyes start to burn as tears welled up in them. Why did he always have to be so careless? He certainly didn't try to be. Why did it take so long to grow up? He quietly slipped through the kitchen so he wouldn't disturb Mom again and walked into his room. He sat on his bed and started to cry. He knew he had to be the dumbest kid in the world. When he was in school, it wasn't so bad. There were lots of other kids and no one seemed to notice how dumb he was. But at home, he realized that he was always doing things that got him into trouble. Even when he tried very hard to be good, he still managed to spill, tear, or mess up something that got his parents mad at him. Billy buried his face in his pillow and sobbed. He felt so lonely and unhappy. He wished he could have someone to play with who wouldn't get mad at him every time he did something dumb or clumsy.
"I'd like to play with you, Billy," he heard a voice in his ear. He looked up and saw a tall young man standing next to his bed. "Who are you?" Billy asked. "I am someone a lot like you, Billy," the young man said. "I am lonely too, and I want someone to play with. You can call me Jack."
"What do you want to play?" asked Billy.
"I don't really know very many games," said Jack. "Can you teach me some?"
"Sure!" was the eager reply. "Let's play with my Legos. We can build a big castle." Billy went over to his toybox and got the box that contained his Lego blocks. Together, he and Jack constructed a beautiful castle. It was very big and had many many rooms. They made tables and chairs out of the blocks for some of the rooms.
"Let's let my dinosaurs be the monsters around the castle," Billy suggested.
"OK," said Jack. The toy dinosaurs made fine monsters as they were placed around the outside of the castle. A lovely Lego tree graced the front of the castle.
"Wouldn't it be fun if we could be small enough to go into the castle?" asked Billy.
"That is a great idea," said Jack. "Close your eyes and wish real hard."
Billy closed his eyes and wished as hard as he could. "Nothing happened," he said as he opened his eyes. To his surprise, he was standing outside a huge, red, yellow, blue, and green castle. Jack was standing next to him, smiling. Billy giggled and ran toward the door of the castle.
Suddenly, he heard a loud roar behind him. He stopped and looked back. There, just past Jack was one of his dinosaurs walking slowly toward the castle. "Run, Jack!" yelled Billy. Jack and Billy raced into the castle, and quickly closed the door.
"Boy, that was close," gasped Jack. "Thanks, Billy. That monster would have gotten me if you hadn't warned me."
"I wouldn't let anything happen to you, Jack," Billy said. "You are my best friend in the whole world."
Billy looked around. "Let's explore the castle," he said. They wandered around the first floor, looking into all the rooms and examining the walls. The rooms on this floor were all empty. Soon they were back in the hall near the front door. The stairs were at the back of the hall.
"Let's go upstairs," said Billy.
Jack ran to the staircase and began to run up the stairs. They were about halfway up the staircase when they heard an eerie sound coming from the second floor. Billy looked at Jack. "We didn't put anything in the castle," he said. "What on earth could that noise be?"
"I don't know," said Jack. "Strange things sometimes happen when we are in the magic kingdom. Are you scared?"
"Naw, I'm in charge of monsters, so I don't have to be scared," was the reply.
"I sure am glad I have you with me to protect me," said Jack. It made Billy feel good to take care of someone bigger than he was. Cautiously, they went up the rest of the stairs. There was a long hall at the top of stairs with rooms off to each side. They heard the strange sound again. It was coming from the first room off the hall to the right. As they entered the room, they saw a small gray creature trying to hide behind a chair in the corner. It was a little smaller than Billy, with very long arms that reached the floor. Its long fingers twitched nervously, as its big orange eyes looked at Jack and Billy in terror. Its small body seemed incredibly thin and frail. As Billy and Jack walked toward it, its eerie cry grew louder.
"We aren't going to hurt you," Billy tried to assure the creature. The big orange eyes blinked. Billy looked at Jack. "I wonder what this creature is so scared of."
"Maybe you can get him to tell us," Jack answered. Jack took a small ring from his pocket and handed it to Billy. "This is a magic ring," he said. "It will allow you to understand all the creatures in the magic kingdom." Billy put the ring on his finger. It fit perfectly. He studied the delicate design on the ring. It looked like a circle of capitol 'B's.
He walked closer to the little gray creature. Suddenly, he heard a small voice inside his head. "Please help me," Billy looked at the little creature. He was sure that the creature's mouth had not move, yet he was also sure that what he had heard had come from the creature.
"What do you want?" asked Billy.
"I am Galeam, the keeper of the castles of the magic kingdom. For hundreds of years, I have kept and maintained castles in the magic kingdom for lonely little people to visit and enjoy. But now the castles and the kingdom are in danger. The monsters of the Taker have somehow gotten into the castle and want to take the castle away from me. Taker has decided that he wants to have all the castles so there are no places for the lonely little people to go."
Billy wanted to help, but wasn't sure what to do. He turned to Jack. "What can I do?" he asked, looking from Jack to Galeam and back to Jack.
"You are the only one who can save the castle," Jack said. "No one else can control the monsters except Taker."
"But you must be careful," said Galeam. "If Taker sees you, he will try to convince you that he is right."
"Where are the monsters now?" asked Billy.
"They are in the room across the hall," answered Galeam. "Wait here," said Billy.
Billy carefully walked across the hall to the room where the monsters were. Quietly, he opened the door, and peeked into the room. There, sitting in two chairs in the middle of the room, were two grown up people; a man and a woman, facing away from the door. He carefully closed the door and tip-toed back to the room where his friends waited. "There are only two grown up people in that room," he said.
Galeam's eyes grew even bigger. "Yes," he said. "They are the monsters that are trying to take the castle."
Billy looked at Jack. "I think that Galeam thinks they are monsters because he had never seen adults before. I doubt if they even know Taker. But they are dangerous," Jack explained. "You see, Billy, the magic kingdom is a special place in your imagination. It exists because you believe in it. Grown up people will try to convince you that it doesn't exist, and if they succeed, the kingdom will no longer exist."
"But I know that it is real....I can see that it is real," insisted Billy.
"You must save the castle," said Galeam. "You must believe in it."
"Billy, we must get the grown up people out of the kingdom. They are a threat as long as they are in the castle," Jack said.
Billy sat down on the chair that Galeam had been hiding behind. He thought and thought about the problem. What to do? All he had to do was to get the grown ups out of the castle. After thinking for a long time, Billy thought of a plan to save the castle and the kingdom.
"Jack, I need your help," said Billy. "I will get them to follow me outside of the castle. Then you must help me get back into my room."
"OK," said Jack. They went outside the door to the hallway. Jack started down the stairs.
"See you in a few minutes," called Billy.
Billy walked across the hall, hesitated a moment, then opened the door. He then realized that the man and the woman in the room looked just like his parents. They looked up and saw him in the doorway. "Billy, what are you doing here?" the man asked.
"Nothing," said Billy. "Can you come outside so I can show you something?" he asked. The man looked at the woman, who nodded.
"OK," said the man and he and the woman followed Billy down the long staircase to the door of the castle. Jack had left the door open, and the three of them walked outside.
As they got through the door, Billy spotted Jack hiding behind the tree. "NOW!!" Billy yelled at Jack, as he closed his eyes and wished real hard.
When he opened his eyes, he was lying on his bed. His mom and dad were standing next to the bed looking at him. "Billy, you were yelling in your sleep," his mom said. Billy looked around his room. Near the toybox was the big beautiful castle--safe at last.
"I must have been dreaming," he said. As he rubbed his sleepy eyes, he felt something on his hand. He looked and there was the magic ring on his finger. It still fit perfectly. He climbed out of bed and walked toward his toybox.
"Dinner is almost ready," his mom said. As his parents left the room, Billy noticed movement near the castle. He looked more closely and to his surprise, he saw Jack, very small now, near the castle. Jack smiled and put his finger to his lips. Billy knew he would never feel so lonely any more.
